  • Westcom, our joint public safety dispatching unit with the cities of Clive and Urbandale. The consolidation of these separate dispatch centers into one allows for greatly improved communication between all of the public safety agencies by placing all three cities onto one radio system, allowing the agencies to directly communicate with one another during large-scale incidents/accidents and share technology at a reduced cost to each. The agreement has also fostered a sense of true cooperation between the cities, encouraging each to lend a helping hand when it is needed.
  • Joint public safety efforts including mutual assistance agreements with our neighboring cities and counties, joint Westside Fire and EMS training, and information sharing.
  • Our recently developed regional salt storage facility, which was built to accommodate several cities in the Greater Des Moines area and help us better manage the accrual and safe storage of the salt we use to maintain our winter roadways.
  • West Des Moines Human Services assistance to low-income families from other western suburbs.
  • The single-stream recycling program, a regional effort to roll out an improved curbside system using toters instead of bins. This effort encourages greater recycling and consistent programming throughout the metro area.
  • Numerous housing programs, including the Dallas County Local Housing Trust Fund and the Metro Home Improvement program, both of which are administered for multiple entities by the City of West Des Moines.
